His father, Wiley, was employed as a locomotive engineer from the time Lonnie was born until the mid-1930s.
He had two older sisters: Ethel (1900-1972) and Beatrice (1903-1954). Ethel married a man named Woodie Murdoch in the late 1910s and had four children: Faye, Ethel, Woodie, and Robert. Beatrice married Harmon Johnston and had two children: Harmon James, Jr. and Ana Lou. Her son, Harmon, enlisted in the war in 1943 and was released in 1946.
